Learning experience

  • Write about why you chose to study Japanese in English,
  • what you are excited about, and/or what you found challenging after the first four weeks of Japanese class.
I have been interested in Japanese culture since I was young. Watching Japanese animation and tv show is usually what I do during my leisure time, so I want to be able to understand what they are saying even without the subtitle. I also travel to Japan quite often, unfortunately I face the same language problem every single time I went there. For example, I have no idea how to tell the taxi driver where I want to go, so we have to spend a lot of time in the cab, try to making sure we understand each other.Another reason is that I took a course last semester call Art of Japan offered by the art history department and I found myself really enjoy Japanese art. Memorizing hiragana is very challenging for me, especially I am used to read everything in Romaji. The gramma is not that difficult for now, but I am pretty sure it will get very complex in the future.

  1. Dear ラムさん,
I definitely relate to your interest to learn. Since taking a class in Japanese last year, I have watched a lot of Japanese animation, read manga, seen Japanese artwork, and listened to a lot of variations of Japanese music, but I totally agree that it's just not the same when you can't fully understand the meaning of the words and the nuances from the language. It's also understandable that you want to learn the language, since you travel to Japan so frequently. With Hiragana, it can be really hard to think only in Hiragana if you can't totally familiarize yourself with the characters. Since your having difficulty memorizing the Hiragana alphabet, there are a couples apps that I use to practice (Hiragana Memory Hint, Katakana Memory Hint, and Japanese!) Other than that, practice (hand-writing), though tedious, can sometimes be very beneficial). Best of luck!

  2. I have similar reasons for learning Japanese as yours. I also enjoy Japanese TV shows, movies, and music a lot, and hope to understand what they are saying without subtitles. Language has no short-cut and it really takes practice. I believe with more practice soon you can master hiragana, katakana and kanji. がんばれ!
